Within Judaism there is a set of teachings on Lashon Hara propogated by a man named Chofetz Chaim. The words "Lashon Hara" are Hebrew words that literally mean "evil tongue" and by extension "evil speech". The Chofetz Chaim taught extensively on the issue of speech believing that every word we say should be thought about before it was spoken. While the Chofetz Chaim has long ago passed from this life, the teachings he left behind are still with us and very timely for our day. There is a foundation known at the Chofetz Chaim Heritage Foundation which keeps the teachings of the Chofetz Chaim alive through reprinting his books, releasing his tapes, and through internet teachings.
